CASE STUDY

Thames Water asked datb to develop their Investment Planning application

Investment Manager

The Investment Manager application was developed and first deployed in 2007.  It has been their investment register for the business for three Regulatory Periodic Reviews (PR09, PR14 and PR19).

Investment Manager has been used as a single database to store their investment needs and solution options.

Despite being built in 2007, the Investment Manager application is still used by Thames Water today, 13 years later.  This is only possible due to the unique capabilities of the kinodb development and deployment platform used to implement this complex application.

The project

The integrated operational Risk Register allows hundreds of front line operational staff from across the business to record and track operational and strategic risks.  Investment Need records allow the definition of capital expenditure requirements arising from growth, risk mitigations, regulatory imperatives and asset replacement programmes.

Each potential Investment Need is assessed against a common cost and benefit framework, enabling their assessment within a long-term portfolio of investments that will be scrutinised by Ofwat within the context of the five-yearly Price Review process.

Investment Manager and the Risk Register fit in the intersection between Risk Management and Investment Planning.  Collectively they allow Thames Water to build multiple investment portfolios and to analyse and understand the costs, benefits and carbon impacts of proposed expenditure.  In the highly regulated UK Water environment, this is essential to enable Thames Water to demonstrate the robustness of a portfolio with a value approaching £10bn over the next five-year regulatory period.

Information
"Over 3,000 investment needs were evaluated by the Thames Water Investment Manager Application. Of these, over 700 were included in our latest business plan"

Asset Investment Programme Analyst

Continuing enhancements

As changes to the regulatory environment and evolving asset management techniques have arisen, Thames Water and datb have worked hand in hand to develop the required additional functionality and add it to the core Investment Manager product.

As an example, one of these enhancements included the extension of the use of cost curves to estimate both capex and carbon impacts of investment.
